Coalition Requests Investigation of Unethical Senate Conduct February 11, 2004
(WASHINGTON) - The Coalition for a Fair Judiciary, in conjunction with several organizations, has sent a letter to the Public Integrity Section of the United States Department of Justice requesting an immediate investigation of the unreleased memos from the Senate Judiciary Committee, now in the possession of Senate Sergeant-at-Arms William Pickle. "Based upon the ethics complaint filed by Manny Miranda last Friday, it has become evident that instances of serious wrongdoing may be documented in memos not released to the American public," said Kay Daly, president of the Coalition for a Fair Judiciary. "Frankly, this would explain the Senate Democrats hysteria over the release of the initial batch of memos." Manuel A. Miranda, a former counsel to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, has informed Senate Ethics Committee Chief Counsel Robert Walker that he read documents obtained from a once-shared section of the Senate Judiciary Committee computer network that "includes evidence of the direct influencing of the Senate's advice and consent role by the promise of campaign funding and election support in the last mid-term election." Memos initially published in the Wall Street Journal and Washington Times and subsequently on the coalition website at www.fairjudiciary.com, show Committee business was profoundly influenced by the demands of special interest groups prior to the most recent mid-term elections and the change in Senate leadership. "The Public Integrity Section of the Department of Justice is tasked with investigating just this sort of misconduct by elected officials documented in these unreleased memos and referenced in Miranda s ethics complaint," said Daly. "It would seem that the memos on our website are merely the tip of the iceberg." Click here for the letter
